Hurricane Franklin, So Far

While Hurricane Idalia was making landfall in Florida, to its east was another storm brewing. Marking the first time since 1950 when the Atlantic had two simultaneous hurricanes with 110+ mph winds, Hurricanes Idalia and Franklin are both ongoing. In this article, we will discuss Hurricane Franklin and its development.

Hurricane Franklin formed near the island of Bermuda and was the first named storm of the 2023 season to become a major hurricane, which is defined as category 3 or greater. While not expected to make landfall in the US, it is still bringing dangerous currents towards the entire east coast.

Sitting at a category 2 hurricane currently, its rip currents have led to closures and caution for coastal areas. According to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, wave heights are between 6 to 11 feet across the east coast, with states like North Carolina expecting the worst. New York’s Governor has already begun suspending swimming at beaches in preparation for the currents.
